Central District helps City of Playford receive National Heart Foundation Award

Through the initiatives of CDFC corporate partner OPAL (City of Playford's Healthy Lifestyle initiative), and with some help from CDFC itself, the City of Playford has been awarded an Annual National Heart Foundation Award recently.

The Heart Foundation Healthy Community Awards provide an opportunity for local governments to celebrate their achievements and receive recognition for their commitment to creating healthy communities. Healthy communities require positive environments and initiatives that support physical activity, healthy lifestyles and a sense of community connection.
The City of Playford submitted an application for these awards to showcase some of the great work they are doing around healthy lifestyles, largely initiated by the OPAL and Reshaping Playford projects. The City of Playford was awarded not only the State winner but the National Winner (in the 'Councils with populations greater than 15,000’ category) for three key initiatives which included implementation of a ‘Healthy Food and Drink Choices Policy’ (being the first South Australian Local Government to implement a policy) and subsequent work that has occurred with Central Districts Football Club and the Aquadome to improve the range of healthy choices available,  the work with the local Davoren Park IGA to improve their supply of fresh fruit and vegetables and lean meats as well as the partnership with Heart Foundation Walking to support the community to increase their physical activity levels.

The award was well received and certainly shows the kind of pro-active approach taken by the City of Playford and many organisations in our local area.

This year CDFC and OPAL have worked together on introducing healthy choices to the match day canteen and Grand Central Children's menu, as well as encouraging families to 'think healthy' when ordering food and drink. While all the tradional footy favourites and pub fare have remained on the menu's at the Club, some healthy alternatives have been added to cater for those people wanting to make a concious effort in this area.

In 2012 OPAL has also provided FREE popcorn and water for CDFC Junior Member events and giveaways, and the OPAL initiative also Sponsors our Junior Development team's 'Top Dogs' programme which delivers a 6 week healthy eating and being active initiative to Primary Schools in our local zone. Approximately 2,200 Children are involved in this programme each year and the CDFC development team (which in 2012 included Trent Goodrem, Luke Habel and other CDFC Players) promote the importance of being active, inproving your performance and eating things such as fruit.

OPAL also sponsors our Home Game Junior Mascot which sees one lucky CDFC Junior Member randomly chosen to run out with the team at each home game. The lucky Member gets to meet their favourite player and the rest of the team and also receives a Guernsey with their favourite players number to keep.
