Harbs' Mid-Season Rant

To say that the first 12 rounds of the 2017 season have been disappointing is a massive understatement.

As a team which had high expectations at the beginning of the year, we have under-performed. We have had too many players that have had average years, including myself.

As a leader of the Football Club it is not acceptable and I will not shy away from that. Sitting eighth on the ladder, with three wins and nine losses, still gives the League side a mathematical chance of making the finals, but we need to start playing an energetic brand of footy.

We have played far too safe (slow) and only twice had 21 contributors on the day (against Adelaide and Glenelg, both of which were good wins).

The Reserves have been fantastic under Jeff Brown this year. The mix of experience and youth, combined with a relentless attitude has them in a great position to play a major part in September. The elder statesmen, such as Matty Prior, Tommy Collier and Corey Reichert, have set a fantastic example to the younger players, while Sam Hanna, Dylan Weaver and Tom Stevens continue to be ultra-consistent. Players to look out for are Jez McLennan, Jackson Hately, Cooper Dahms and Jordon Boyle.

The league debuts of younger players who display an attitude that older players admire both on and off the field have also provided a ray of positivity. People like Dylan Weaver, Ben Walter, Josh Richardson, Ryan Llewellyn, Will Hewett and Marcus Barreau have had good years and it all comes off the back of good, old-fashioned hard work.

While David Haydon, who has been around for a little longer, is also impressing.

The performances of our U16 and U18 team have been great, with the senior colts becoming a relentless group under coach Darren Reeves. The U16 squad were Grand Finalists earlier in the year. It will be very exciting for the future of the football club with the amount of local, talented players coming through the senior ranks in the next couple of years.

News from the Kennel:

• Nick Holman has had a remarkable season, with some players already starting to call him ‘Norm’ (Norm Russell Medal Winner for B & F).

• Benny Walter will have surgery on his knee later this week. ‘Walts’ is a great lad who really energises the playing group with his enthusiasm and we wish him all the best.

• Sam Milne is officially off the market. In more concerning news, his intelligence was brought into question when he asked players after a recent team meeting as to “How can Milera possibly have kicked 22 and a half goals?”; this was in relation to Glenelg’s Ian Milera having kicked 22.5 for the season (22 goals, five behinds).

• Chris Jansen is bemused as to why he is not being paid by YouTube for his “amazing, jaw-dropping” segment CJ’s Corner.

• Caleb Edmead has recently visited the United States, Switzerland, Sweden, Iran and Sri Lanka to investigate the possibilities of having hamstring transplants.

• Matty Claughton has been nicknamed ‘Clutch’ after his composed set shot helped the Reserves to an important win on the weekend.

• Josh Richardson and Josh Coleman are also off the market.

• Nick Gillard has declared the OKC Thunder in the NBA certain winners of the 2017/18 Season after a recent trade period. Those in the grandstand during the Glenelg game may have heard ‘Gilly’ carrying on like a pork chop about the NBA.

See you at the footy,
