Local Boy Haydon brings up the 50

By Ella Watson

Dave Haydon 50 games for Centrals.

Last weekend saw defender Dave Haydon play his 50th game for the Central District Football Club against Norwood at The Parade.

Haydon shared his milestone game with fellow team mate and Vice-Captain Luke Habel who played his 100th game for the Club.

The game saw the 2 teams locked in a fierce battle for victory and the lead changed hands many time throughout the game before Centrals made a stunning break in the final term kicking 5 goals to 1, the final score reading Norwood 8.13.(61) to Centrals 13.15.(93).

The game started in favour of Norwood with the Redlegs kicking the first goal of the match, but Centrals came back quickly and finished the quarter 2 point in front.

Half time saw Centrals struggling to maintain form and the club looked in trouble at the start of the third term, but time on in the fourth saw Centrals turn the game around.

In his 50th game last Saturday Haydon played at half back and was instrumental in helping the team restrict Norwood’s full forwards Miller, Dawe and Persinos to under 7 possessions for the game.

Haydon came to Centrals as a Junior in the Clubs Development Squad, he worked his way up through the ranks and took a couple of seasons to cement his position in the League squad.

In 2011 Haydon was nominated for the Powerade Star Search award after a standout performance in his round 10 debut against Norwood.

Proving to have a strong record against Norwood, in 2012 Haydon won the Bob Lee Medal for best on ground in Central’s Reserves Premiership where Centrals reigned victorious over Norwood winning 12.9.(81) to Norwood 11.8.(74).

In his 50 games at the club Haydon’s role has not changed much, but his intensity when attacking the ball has increased greatly.

Known for his attack at the footy and his strong tackling pressure Haydon plays a strong defensive role and his main responsibility is to shut down the oppositions small forward a job which requires Haydon to be quick on his feet.

Haydon has always maintained that his style of footy is simple, but aggressive a style which has served him well in his 50 games at the club.

Haydon will play his 51st game for the Central District Football Club this weekend when they take on Adelaide at 2.10pm at My Money House Oval, Elizabeth this Saturday 25th of June.
