Weaver - a player to watch

By Ella Watson

Dylan Weaver is proving to be a player to watch.

Currently playing in the Central District Football Clubs Reserves Team, Weaver is working hard to be considered for League selection late this season and into next season.

Weaver plays on the half back flank in the Reserves and his responsibilities include placing pressure on his opponent and counter attacking, carrying and pushing the ball forward.

Contributing to Weavers development this season is his improved knowledge of the game, Weaver has proven he can read the play well and he demonstrates this by moving forward and coming off his opponent in the back six to support his team mates pushing up the field.

While his game plan has improved out of site Weaver is now concentrating on improving his tackling ability and his skills under pressure.

“One thing that’s been identified with myself to improve on is my tackling, body size and skills under pressure so that’s what I’ve been looking to improve on to push for a ones’ spot.”

Weaver started at the club in the development squad and was recruited by the club from Trinity College in Gawler.

“I started my career at centrals in the 15’s and played under 16’s and 18’s at the club.”

“It definitely helped me prepare for reserves footy, the development squads taught me that it’s all about hard work and getting the best out of yourself every session and always looking to improve.”

Weaver played his first Reserves game in 2015 in round 18 at home against Glenelg, and while the game proved to be disappointing for Centrals losing 11.9-75 to 16.10-106, Weaver looks back on his first seniors game as a valuable learning experience.

“We didn’t get the win but it was good to get the first one out the way, the step up from 18’s to senior footy was a bit bigger than I thought, the speed of the game is a lot faster and opposition players are on you a lot quicker than in the 18’s.”

This season has not been smooth sailing for the Reserves having lost more games than they have won, quite often leaving their run too late in the game to catch up on the score board.

“Our season this year in the two’s has been a bit disappointing, with the list we had we thought we’d be winning a lot more games and having a lot more consistent performances.”

“Consistency and skills are the big things for us, there is too many games this year where we’ve left it to late and costs ourselves games not because the opposition is better but because we’ve gifted them easy goals on the back of our mistakes.”

Currently sitting 7th on the ladder the boys will be looking to win all 4 of their final games this season in the hope that it will be enough to push them up the ladder in finals contention.

“With 4 games to go we’ll be looking to win the majority and finish the season off on a high.”

Weaver is a dedicated member of the Central District Football Club and his goal is to be a part of the club for as long as possible, Weaver grew up supporting the club and is thrilled by the idea that he has the chance to play in the same team as the legends he grew up watching.

“As a kid seeing all the success they had showed me what a great club it is.”

“The club has done a lot for me personally and it’s a bit of a home away from home so it means a lot to me.”

“It can be quite daunting as a kid going up for your first senior preseason not knowing anyone, but the boys where very welcoming and I think I’ve made some great friendships from that day.”

With only 4 games and a bye left before finals Weaver may find he isn’t selected for the League team this season, but with his obvious hard work and improved skills he is a strong contender for selection next season and is a player to watch.
