BULLDOGS LOOK TO FUTURE
By Robert Laidlaw
Central District met an AFL-loaded Adelaide Crows in Saturday’s SANFL clash at Elizabeth, with the 55-point loss possibly the best the Bulldogs could have expected.
The fitness and skill level of the Crows demonstrated the unbalanced disadvantage the semi-professional SANFL sides are at, when the AFL clubs are relatively injury-free.
With five goals to one in the first quarter, Adelaide laid the foundation of its win, as the Crows easily responded when they had to and at times looked like a side going through a training routine.
To its credit Central fought valiantly against the odds, threatening to mount challenges at various times, although skill errors and wayward kicking for goal handicapped its efforts to be more competitive.
With three first-gamers, the Bulldogs had an eye on the future, with Ryan Falkenberg, Steve Burton and Mitch Payne demonstrating a desire to become regular league footballers.
To open the second quarter, Falkenberg looked composed as he kicked Central’s second goal of the match but by half time Adelaide had added three more majors to lead 8.3 to 2.4.
The Bulldogs played their best footy of the game in the first 10 minutes of the third term after Adelaide kicked the first six-pointer, but only managed two majors from five scoring shots, which included Troy Menzel’s magic snap for goal of the game.
After Adelaide then booted the next two goals, late majors from Trav Schiller and Menzel saw Central just 28-points down at lemons.
Unfortunately the Crows kicked the only four majors of the final stanza to pull away easy winners.
Jarrod Schiller played another outstanding game and would be an early favourite for the Club’s Best and Fairest, while Menzel also has been in great form.
Burton made a wonderful debut with 25 possessions, demonstrating the reserves form that earned him his chance at league level.
This week the Bulldogs have a Sunday game against Glenelg at Glenelg.
Best: J. Schiller, Menzel, Burton, Fort, Hoskin, T. Schiller, Habel, Jy. Neagle.
Goals: Menzel, T. Schiller 2, Falkenberg, Jy. Neagle 1.
