Dogs Dig In
The young Dogs dug deep to get over the line in a thriller against Woodville-West Torrens in Saturday’s Preliminary Final at Thebarton Oval.
It was your typical Preliminary Final contest, low scoring, contested and high pressured.
The first quarter set the tone for the entire match, it was going to be whoever could make the most of their opportunities who would come up trumps.
It was Luca Whitelum who took a great contested mark and converted for the first of the game, the Eagles responded with one of their own late in the quarter to lead at the first break by a singular point.
4 points to start the second quarter looked like it was going to prove costly to the Dogs as the Eagles made the most of their opportunities to kick first two goals of the quarter. It was until Jordan Tippins quick snap saw the Dogs kick their first of the second quarter and reduced the margin to five points going into the main break.
It was the Dogs who started the better of the two sides in the second half with two in the first five minutes. Luca Whitelum converted his snap from the boundary for his second of the match and Nicholas Lange slotted his set shot.
The Eagles wrestled back momentum to kick the next goal, fortunately for the Dogs their next three scoring shots were all behinds to see the match all tied up going into the last quarter.
It was the Eagles who got the jump kicking the first goal of the last quarter, but it was Tyson Richard’s Max Gawn like goal the following centre bounce which got the crowd of their feet and brought out Tyson’s usual euphoric celebration.
But it was Jordan Tippins who was the surprise package, Jordan who hasn’t played since round 18 crumbed the ball 35m from goal, burned off his opposition and kicked the match winner at the 24th minute mark.
The Bulldogs will take on the Bays in the Grand Final at Adelaide Oval, Sunday October 3rd 12:00pm.
Goal-kickers: Tippins, Whitelum 2, Lange, Richard 1.
