Our round 4 match against the Eagles was never going to be easy, with the Eagles confidence boosted by a win the previous week.
We started well by having great intent to win the ball or stick the tackle, laying 21 tackles in the first quarter. Unfortunately our effort in these areas dropped off significantly. Our tackles dropping to just 7 for the second quarter and the Eagles taking a 1 goal lead into the long break. We managed to break even in the third term with our defence holding strong against a barrage of eagles attempts to score and while we had the significant wind advantage we didn’t use it well enough. In the end we fell short by 10 points, another disappointing close loss. On the night we had some strong contributors, in the ruck Isabelle Starmer played her best game for the Club and showed great effort all night, our Captain Shelby Smith gathered 21 touches and 6 tackles certainly doing her bit, Caitlen Teague had another high effort game and Lauren Smith was a welcome return from concussion gathering 14 touches and 5 tackles. In defence Taryn Wills cut off plenty of the Eagles attack, Maddy Lane gathered plenty of the ball and rebounded well, while Murphy & Sonneman also played solid games.
The focus this week will be on what makes us a strong competitive football team and doing the fundamentals a whole lot better.
