Our round 5 clash couldn’t have come quick enough, after enduring another close loss in round 4 the team was looking forward to making amends against last seasons finalists West Adelaide. The week on the track was centered around fundamentals, physical competitiveness and lifting the standards.
The girls set a high standard in the first quarter getting first to the ball, moving it with purpose and precision resulting in an 18 point lead kicking 2 goals 6 points. West Adelaide hit back in the second quarter narrowing the margin to 3 points at the main break. Our girls fired up in the third quarter kicking 5 goals lead by Chantel Reynolds who kicked 2 and gave Nicola Biagi an easy goal in the square. Most pleasing was the fact we finished the game well winning the game by 22 points and getting our season back on track. Shelby Smith played with great courage and skill totalling 26 disposals with 73% efficiency, Chantel Reynolds had the ball on a string and showed amazing skill kicking 3 goals, Alicia Butler was a revelation up forward pulling down 7 marks and collecting 21 disposals, Katelyn Rosenzweig had another productive afternoon collecting 17 disposals, kicking a goal and enjoying a run in the ruck. First gamer Caitlen Wendland had a damaging second half helping to break the game open, while Isabelle Starmer won the ruck battle and fought all day. Karissa Searle showed her class on the wing with ball in hand hitting plenty of targets and helping in defence.
The girls showed what they are truly capable of and a win like this will go along way to building the belief required to take the next step. We look forward to taking this momentum into our Round 6 match against last seasons premiers North Adelaide.
