Report from Women’s Senior Coach, Shaun Ribbons.
Round 7 quickly became a really exciting match for us with the inclusion of four girls making their debut. They included 16 year old Aisha Thomas, 17 Year old Keely Cannizzaro, Shannon Murphy and Megan Boers.
As expected Norwood came to play with their hard running, physical style of football which we knew we had to match to stay in the contest. We were certainly matching the league leaders in the contest and our defence battled really hard but their ability to create repeat entries slowly resulted in scores on the board.
At quarter time, we gave up a three point lead that extended to 17 points by the main break. In the second half we made some structural changes that had some positive results especially in the final quarter resulting in us winning the inside 50 count and the contested possessions. Norwood’s ability to use the ball well and work exceptionally hard from contest to contest was the main point of difference on the day, and this is a direct result of cumulative pre-seasons and experience.
A number of our girls had moments in the game that showed they can compete at this level, the challenge now is to do that for long periods. Karissa Searle showed she has the ability to impact games with her strong marking and great ball use from the wing. Laitiah Huynh again showed her ability to out run the opposition spending time in the midfield as well as up forward. Kimmy Fry battled well all day and gave us a spark in the midfield after half-time. Jayme-Lee Sonneman battled really well in the ruck racking up 10 clearances, 17 hit outs and 13 disposals. Isabella Wilson showed her class with ball-in-hand, taking a number of good marks and moving it quickly. Our defence in O’Brien, Sonneman and Solly also showed resilience.
We now get the opportunity to have another battle with West Adelaide this week at 3:45pm at X Convenience Oval. It would be fantastic to see all your support once again, we all truly appreciate it.
