In order to stay in touch with the competition round 8 against Sturt at Tanunda oval loomed as a do or die match. The late inclusion of crows listed AFLW star Chloe Scheer was an added bonus and she certainly made herself aware to the opposition with a bone crunching tackle early in the game. Sturt came out firing in the first quarter hammering our defense with 12 I50’s but fortunately strong intercept marking by Murphy, Sonneman & Madigan ensured they didn’t get to far ahead. While a touch of class by Chantel Reynolds put us within 2 points at the first break. Conditions deteriorated as the Barossa dew set in making things difficult as we kicked 4 points to Sturt’s 1 goal. The girls lifted in the 3rd quarter lead by courageous captain Shelby Smith who laid 4 tackles and ended the game with a high of 10. Tackling proved to be the difference with the girls laying 20 for the quarter and finishing with a 1 point lead at the last break. The final term was tense especially when Sturt kicked a major early in the quarter to take a 5 point lead. Enter Katelyn Rosenzweig who kicked a trademark snap to take back the lead with 4 minutes remaining. The team remained focused and desperate ultimately holding on for a season saving win with the help of a very vocal home crowd.
Chloe Scheer showed why she’s one of the games elite players with multiple moments of class by taking contested mark’s, making groundballs look easy in the slippery conditions and kicking with purpose ending the game with 21 disposals and 6 tackles. Shelby Smith lifted when the team needed her ending with 11 possessions and a huge 10 tackles. Paige Allan shook some knee soreness to end the game with 12 disposals and breaking the line’s with her speed. Caitlen Teague continued her early season form with a strong contested game including 12 disposals, 5 tackles and 3 inside 50’s. In defense Shannon Murphy was again instrumental taking multiple marks and sneaking down to kick an important 3rd term goal, assisted by the desperation of Gemma Doughty, Demi Sonneman and Georgia Madigan who all laid 5 tackles each. Nicole Mark showed why she is one of the best defenders in the competition looking at home with long clearing kicks from defense.
The girls stayed focused and maintained belief for the entire 68 minutes ultimately keeping our chances alive as we look towards a truly season defining game against West this Saturday afternoon.
